In the old days, you could find writer, editor, and quiltmaker Mary Fons lugging several suitcases full of quilts across the country, going from gig to gig, airport to airport. Eventually, someone from your guild would have to retrieve her from the airport so that she could come lecture, teach, and do her trunk show for your members. Mary Fons event was always successful  — so educational! so entertaining! — but does anyone miss the airport part? Exactly.

Lucky for you, Mary, and the airport parking attendants, there’s a different way to do things. The coronavirus pandemic has caused great suffering in our world, but as Mary likes to say, “The quilts must go on!” Because of that, Mary is offering content for your guild via Zoom while we’re all at home, together. Wine is optional but encouraged. Mary’s online presentation includes:

• Trunk Show Mary will share with you the stories, stitches, and angst behind a stack of quilts she has selected just for you. Often, trunk shows focus primarily on a quiltmaker’s show, sample, or otherwise commercial quilts; though Mary will show plenty of quilts she’s made for publication/TV, many others hold deeper story: vintage quilts, inherited quilts, and Harriet Powers reproduction quilts purchased on eBay (!) get the attention they deserve in this truly original trunk show. Mary will also share about Quiltfolk magazine: her role as editor (since 2016), the magazine’s approach to quilt culture in America, and perhaps a sneak peek into upcoming issues … !
• Entertaining Quilt History Mary is an American quilt history junkie and cannot separate any discussion of any quilt without dipping into its fascinating cultural context. Year after year, Mary’s QuiltCon lectures sell out, as attendees know they’ll get deeply researched quilt history with plenty of humor and genuine passion. You’ll get that, too.
